daddy dialogues: How I came to love cloth diapers

Mr. Sandbox here. Thinking about my weekly posts I figured I would use the first few to lay the ground of how I got here. Today, I figured would be the perfect opportunity to talk about I fell in love with cloth diapers.  You see, when my wife first brought it up I immediately thought about how much work it was going to be. I didn't want to play with pins and didn't even want to think of the mess. There she stood, 5 month pregnant telling me about all the pros (saving money, saving the planet for our daughter, etc). She showed me a photo of a bumGenius Diaper and thought, okay, I'll go with it for now, I'm sure it's just a phase.

When the pumpkin arrived my wife had secretly been making a stash of cloth diapers. I still wasn't sure about it and snatched up some newborn ones from the hospital and a pack one night when I went to the store. The baby was almost big enough to fit into the cloth diapers so we just used the disposable for the first two weeks then we made the leap. It was in the afternoon I walked into the baby's room to see what's going on and there she was, the cutest little thing with the biggest little tush. I immediately smiled and thought to myself well, it can't be that bad, right?

In the days followed, my wife taught me how to use them and how to clean them. I must say, the diaper sprayer was the best invention ever! Once we filled up the pail, she talked me through how to wash them, cold rinse, suds hot cycle, no suds hot cycle and line dry. Easy. After everything was dry, I helped her take them down from the line and was amazed how clean they looked. I was expecting lots of stains and smells. Just the opposite.

Weeks went by and we quickly found the routine. I thought about all the messes we had from the disposables and noticed we didn't have blow outs. There was no stinky smell anymore that we had from disposables. This was much easier than I thought. I still have days where my daughter makes a huge mess, but at least now I know it will be contained in the diaper and I don't have to worry about it. I'm glad she converted me.

How did you convince your significant other to try to use cloth?

Top Natural Baby Products

It great to see that one of our brands we carry was featured on ABC Good Morning America.  They highlight a number of Green Spouts products like Baby Food Storage Cubes.  We absolutely loves these in our house.  It's a great storage system when you make your child's food, pack it all up, freeze it, and have it all prepared for the week.  They unfreeze quickly and the doesn't make the food taste weird.
They also highlighted the Disposable Compressed Wipes Tube and Refill Set.  These are just the coolest things.  The tube is just a little bigger than a tube of lip stick and the wipes are free of alcohol, harsh chemicals, chlorine, and perfumes. They are also antibacterial and hypoallergenic.  All you do is get the wipe wet, and it expands into this super soft wipe.  What a perfect addition to your diaper bag!

Traveling with cloth diapers

When we started out on the cloth diaper route, our daughter was 2 weeks old we fell in love.  We loved the easiness, the cuteness, and even the savings!  Time went by and we were starting to gear up to go on our first real vacation.  In the weeks prior, we talked about how we needed to buy disposables and both of us just hated the idea but didn't know how we could pack everything we needed and how to wash them.  That's when we learned about Flip Diapers! Flip Diapers is a great hybrid diaper that we could use Flip disposable inserts as well as the cloth insert.  As we read all about it, we thought about all the future trips we'd take and realized we could use them on day trips or other vacations.  We took the leap and bought a few Flip Diapers and a package of disposable inserts.

  In the suitcase, we packed:
Baby Sandbox in a Ribbit Flip relaxing by the pool
The detergent was to wash covers by hand in the sink for the overnight, and if any of the covers got dirty.  Hand washing was super easy.  After we changed the little one, I took the inserts out, rinsed them out and tossed them in the wet bag to wash when we got home.  I then washed the cover and hung that on the shower to dry for the next night.  Every night, I checked the covers and if one was dirty, I washed and hung it to dry for the next day.  Granted it was a little more work tossing dirty disposable diapers in the trash but in total it wasn't more than a few minutes of my time.

What we loved about it all was the ease of it all and how adorable she was!  We got a lot of compliments on how great it was we were doing cloth on vacation.  We even met another couple who were afraid of trying it on vacation but after we told them about it, they were going to do it for their next trip.

Have you traveled with cloth diapers?  If so, what are your tips to travel with cloth diapers?

Changing the world one diaper at a time...

The amazing Great Cloth Diaper Change Event happened last weekend and just loved reading all the stories from around the country about this amazing event:
Dozens of mothers and fathers filled Hop Scotch Children's Store Saturday afternoon for a world record attempt at the most cloth diapers changed simultaneously. The owner of the store says the event was a great way to celebrate Earth Day weekend while promoting cloth diapers, which are a greener, cheaper alternative to disposables.

We'd love to hear where you participated at?  What diaper of choice did your little one change into?

Just the beginning...

Mr.Sandbox here:

Just want to introduce myself and tell you a little about our crazy life from my perspective. Last summer, my wife gave birth to an adorable little pumpkin. Everyone warned me that my life would be different. I never realized how much I could love and bond with something so quickly.

Staying in the hospital for a few days after she was born allowed me to absorb the process. My favorite memory was taking a nap with her for the first time. She was so small and swaddled up in her blanket. I can even remember her sweet little scent.

It's amazing how fast time flies. It feels like yesterday she was cooing for the first time. Now I find myself chasing after her to make sure she doesn't crawl through the doggie door. She keeps me on my toes and I doubt that will change for the rest of my life.

Living locally...

Our backyard garden with our little girl on her swing.

A few years ago, I saw a youtube video about this family that lived in Pasadena that grew 6,000 lbs of food from their yard.  What got me is that is that their lot size was around 7,000 sq feet.  I thought about for a few days and decided I wanted to have a little garden too.  I started small and grew lettuce, carrots, spaghetti squash and tomatoes.  We had squash for months and I can't even begin to tell you how many cherry tomatoes we had.  For six months after that I never had to buy sauce, fresh or canned tomatoes.  The garden has grown over the years to what now is a thing of art.  We don't grow 6,000 lbs but we do grow more than enough for our family, friends and even some neighbors.  It's been a very educational tool to not only me but also to my husband and hopefully with our kids when they get older.

Starting up a garden, whether is a square foot garden, container garden, or one like ours the idea can seem more daunting.  All you need is a sun, place to plant, dirt, seeds, and way to water.  Once you plant, you just water and watch the plants grow.  You don't even need sprays for bug or grow fertilizers. Just a few egg shells and banana peels do wonders.

  Have you tried gardening?
